Trivia Question❓

What is the official mascot of the Edmonton Oilers hockey team and where did it get its name from?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Happy monday Edmontonians!

You know those mosquitoes? They are at it again... Lets talk about them a bit.

In this week's scoop:

1. Heat Keeping Mosquitoes at Bay in Edmonton: A Welcome Break or a Worrisome Sign?

2. Did you know?

3. What's happening this week?

4. Your Weather

Let’s go...!..

Every summer, Edmontonians brace for an invasion of mosquitoes. When the mercury rises and those pests disappear, the whole city breathes easier.

You can finally enjoy a backyard evening without performing the mosquito slap dance. It feels good, doesn’t it? Fewer bites mean more nights outdoors.

Restaurants with patios aren’t at war with clouds of bugs, and everyone shares their surprise at having an actual summer, instead of surviving one.Still, the reason behind this break should give people pause.

Long stretches of heat and dry weather dry up puddles and marshland. Mosquitoes need calm, warm water to breed, so the hot spell naturally puts a dent in their numbers.

As much as we celebrate this, it’s a warning baked into sunshine. Climate change isn’t subtle - sometimes, it skips the mosquito season entirely. A dry Edmonton isn’t just quieter. Mosquitoes feed more than just community complaints. Birds, bats, frogs, and fish rely on these insects for food. If mosquito numbers tumble, those species don’t send us a disappointed Yelp review, but the impact ripples out. Songbirds might echo a little less.

Marshes may lose more than their puddle-loving regulars. Before we get too comfortable, it’s worth wondering if the missing mosquitoes tell us something bigger. Nature keeps a tight schedule, and when old patterns change, we notice—not always in ways we expect. It’s a shift that deserves more than a passing shrug.

This summer, go ahead and enjoy that bug-free mojito on the patio. Just remember, the quiet might say more about what’s changing than what’s gone.
