Residents of Slave Lake, a town in northern Alberta, are on high alert due to an encroaching wildfire.
The fire, ignited by lightning on Sunday, is currently burning northeast of the town.
Despite some overnight rainfall, an evacuation alert remains in effect for the entire town and certain properties in the surrounding Municipal District of Lesser Slave River.
As of Monday morning, the wildfire has consumed approximately 44 hectares of forest and continues to burn out of control.
Firefighters, supported by helicopters and air tankers, are working tirelessly to contain the blaze.
Residents are advised to prepare for a possible evacuation by gathering essentials such as medication, important documents, pet supplies, water, and clothing.
Vehicles should be fueled and ready for departure.
The community, home to around 7,000 people, is no stranger to the dangers of wildfires.
In May 2011, a devastating fire destroyed nearly one-third of Slave Lake, including 400 homes and businesses.
Mayor Francesca Ward provided an update on social media, stating that crews have made significant progress in building containment lines around the fire.
She expressed gratitude to residents for their vigilance and preparedness.
According to Alberta Wildfire, there are currently 11 active wildfires in the Slave Lake district, with several burning out of control.
The wildfire danger in the region remains very high due to hot and dry conditions.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to follow any instructions from local authorities.
Preparedness and prompt action are crucial in ensuring the safety of the community. |
